Sunshine Coast City Hall

Client/Project

Sunshine Coast City Hall was built in 2022 with a goal of creating a central hub for civic, business, and community activities in the Maroochydore city centre.

Task/Scope/Problem Statement

A Lightning Protection System was required to protect the people and property of this site due to the vital roles and services within the building and its proximity to a marine environment.

As the building design was inspired by the Sunshine Coast’s Glass House Mountains, built to embrace the Sunshine Coasts climate and green star design accreditation, a system was required that would ensure the design was complemented whilst still providing a robust Lightning Protection System.

Solution

QPP completed the installation of a Conventional Lightning Protection System. This included finials spaced at no greater than 20m apart and ensured all metal protrusions were bonded into the Air Termination Network to meet Australian Standard
AS 1768 :2021.

Result

The connections were all tested for continuity through the down conductors to the Earth Termination Network (ETN) providing a safe path for the lightning current to travel through the system to the ground. A green star design accreditation building with a Lightning Protection System that meets the Australian Standards ensures this beautiful building and its occupants remain safe for many years to come.
