Client/Project
Landmark/Structure/ Critical
Proserpine Water Tower, a historic landmark built 1902. The Proserpine Water Tower stores and regulates water for the town of Proserpine, Queensland.
Task/Scope/Problem Statement
Upgrade the existing Lightning Protection System. Over time and given the towers proximity to a Marine Environment, the towers LPS had corroded and was not fit for purpose.
Located in the Whitsundays region, known for being impacted by cyclones and severe weather, ensuring robust Lightning Protection was crucial to safeguard the tower (towns water supply) and its sensitive communication equipment.
Solution
QPP installed an upgraded Lightning Protection System featuring an Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air termination system on the towers rooftop. This system was chosen for its ability to effectively mitigate lightning risk and comply with Internation Standard NF C 17-102 and AS 1768-2021. Installation of upgraded lightning protection system using a single air termination system and down conductor connected to the existing copper plate earth termination network.
Result
Proserpine Water Tower now stands fortified against lightning strikes, ensuring its continued role in serving the community’s radiocommunications needs and water supply while preserving its historical significance.
