Lamb House (116-year-old heritage home)

Client/Project

Historical Buildings/Structures

Lamb House (116-year-old heritage home), Jubilee Place (133-year-old hotel) and Ravenswood Heritage Chimneys (over 100-year-old chimneys from gold mine).

Task/Scope/Problem Statement

These historical sites needed to be protected from direct lightning strikes while ensuring the historical appearance of the structures were not altered whilst adhering to strike heritage guidelines.

In addition, given geological composition of the earth in some locations, such as Kangaroo Point where it is predominantly rock, additional measures needed to be taken to achieve Earth Resistivity below the required 10 ohms as per AS1768:2021.

Solution

QPP completed installation of both horizontal and vertical elements (Air Termination System) on Lamb House, Ravenswood Historical Chimneys and the system on Jubilee Place consisted of vertical elements as well as utilising the metallic roof to meet Australian Standard AS 1768 2021.

Result

Testing of the Earth Termination System (ETN) achieved the required results of under 10 ohms at Jubilee Place and Ravenswood. At Lamb House, the soil resistivity and composition were such that achieving a resistance to earth less than 10 Ω was not feasible. In these instances, the lowest practical value was sought.
